Fall Garden Prep 🍂

As the summer crops wind down and the cooler breezes start to roll in, it’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for fall. Let me walk you through the easy steps of transitioning your garden.

Easy Steps to Prep Your Garden for Fall:

  1. Clean Up the Beds

    • Pull Out the Old Stuff: Take out any leftover plants from the summer. These can attract pests and diseases if left in the ground.

    • Weed Out the Trouble: Grab those weeds before they drop seeds. This little effort now saves you a big headache in the spring.

  2. Boost the Soil

    • Add Some Good Stuff: Throw some compost onto your garden beds. This is like a vitamin boost for your soil, replenishing it after a busy growing season.

    • Check and Adjust: Test your soil’s pH and adjust it if needed. If it’s too acidic, sprinkle some lime. Too alkaline? Some sulfur will do the trick.

  3. Plant Your Fall Veggies

    • Pick the Right Plants: Go for cool-weather lovers like kale, spinach, carrots, and beets. They don’t mind the chill.

    • Rotate Your Crops: Try not to plant the same type of veggie in the same spot as last year. This helps keep your soil healthy and pests confused.

  4. Protect Your Plants

    • Lay Down Mulch: A cozy blanket of mulch keeps the soil moist and warm, and keeps those weeds down.

    • Cover Up: If frost shows up early in your area, have some cold frames or row covers ready to shield your new plants.

  5. Care for Your Tools

    • Clean and Store: Clean off all your tools to get rid of dirt and grime. A little oil on anything with moving parts can prevent rust over the winter.

    • Sort Your Supplies: Make sure all your gardening gear like seeds and ties are organized and tucked away safely. You’ll know exactly where everything is when planting season rolls around again.

So pull on those gardening gloves, enjoy the fresh autumn air, and give your garden the TLC it needs. Remember, every weed you pull now is one less you’ll have to deal with when the growing starts again!

Finishing Strong – Concluding Jordan Peterson’s Life Rules 💜

In this final installment of our series on Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life," we tackle the last four rules. These help fine-tune our daily interactions and remind us to appreciate life’s little joys, keeping life on the homestead balanced and fulfilling.

Peterson's Rules Explained:

  1. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t: Keep an open mind. Whether it’s a neighbor’s gardening tip or advice from a veteran farmer, every conversation might have something valuable for you.

  2. Be precise in your speech: Speak clearly and directly to avoid misunderstandings, essential whether you’re instructing workers or making deals.

  3. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding: Let kids (and sometimes yourself) take risks and learn from them. It’s part of growing and getting stronger.

  4. Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street: Enjoy the simple pleasures, like a quiet moment with nature or a spontaneous break during a busy day, to refresh and refocus.

Reflections and Actions:

  • Reflect: Recall a conversation where you learned something unexpected from someone else. What impact did this have on your thoughts or actions?

  • Act: Engage in at least two conversations this week with the sole intention of learning something new. Document what you learn and how it could be applied to your homesteading life.

Using these twelve rules as a guide can help you manage life’s chaos and thrive in it. Thanks for joining us on this journey through Jordan Peterson’s life lessons, and may they help you lead a structured and joyful homesteading life.
