Homestead Tip of the Day:

After your plants finish flowering, let some fruits fully ripen on the plant for seeds to mature. For dry seeds like tomatoes, dry them on a paper towel. For wet seeds like peppers or cucumbers, ferment them in water for a few days, rinse, and dry. Store seeds in labeled envelopes or jars in a cool, dry place. Next year, plant them and enjoy your garden without buying new seeds!

Personal Development

The Science of Happiness 😁

We all want to be happy, but sometimes it feels like a real chore! Life can get pretty busy and sometimes it’s a bumpy ride. But guess what? There are real tricks to make ourselves happier, and they're not even hard to do!

Here are some fun and easy ways to boost your happiness:

  • Give thanks: Feeling thankful is like a magic spell for happiness. Every day, think about things you're happy to have, like your pet or your favorite book. It’s like collecting smiles in a jar!

  • Hang out with friends and family: Our favorite people make us happy. Try to spend time with your family or chat with a friend. Even a short playdate or a quick joke shared can make your day better.

  • Move around: Dancing, jumping, or even racing up the stairs can make you feel great. Moving around makes your brain release happy chemicals, kind of like a happiness potion!

  • Help others: Doing nice things for others isn’t just good for them—it makes you feel great, too! It’s like getting a happiness high-five every time you help someone.

  • Get into your groove: Find a hobby that you love so much, you forget about everything else. Whether it’s drawing, building models, or solving puzzles, getting lost in what you love is a happiness booster.

  • Watch less TV: Screens can be fun, but too much time with them can make you feel lonely or sad. Try to mix it up with games that don’t need a screen or reading a book.

  • Set cool goals: Setting goals gives you a roadmap to happiness. They're like little quests in a video game. Set goals you can reach and celebrate when you do something awesome.

So, let’s crank up the happiness tunes and dance our way to a cheerier life! Start small, keep at it, and you'll see how your world turns into a happier place, step by step.

Navigating Big Changes 💞

Big changes like moving to a new town or starting at a new school can really shake things up for kids. It's like being the new kid on the block—or the playground! But don’t worry, we can help make these changes smoother and less scary for them.

Here are some fun and easy ways to help kids adjust when big things change:

  • Chat about the change: Sit down and talk about what’s going to happen and why. If you’re moving, you could chat about the new house and all the cool places you can explore together.

  • Take a sneak peek: If you can, visit the new place before you move. It’s like being a detective, finding clues about your new adventure. This can make the new place feel less strange when you finally move.

  • Stick to your routines: Try to keep things like bedtime and mealtime the same. It’s like having a piece of home that never changes, even when everything else does.

  • Share your feelings: Let your kids know it’s totally fine to feel happy, sad, or anything in between. Maybe they could draw how they feel or tell you about it during bedtime stories.

  • Jump into new fun activities: Encourage them to join a club or a sports team. It’s a great way to make new friends and feel like part of the team.

  • Keep smiling: Show your kids that you’re excited about the change. When they see you smiling, they’ll want to smile too!

  • Be patient: Remember, getting used to new things takes time. Remind your kids that it’s okay to feel a bit wobbly at first. Soon, they’ll be back on their feet, running faster than ever!

Changes can be big, but they don’t have to be scary. With these tricks up your sleeve, your kids can learn to be change champions. And who knows? This big change could turn out to be one of the best adventures yet!

The Steady Home’s Guide to Cooking From Scratch

Homemade Tomato Sauce 🍅

Project Overview: Creating homemade tomato sauce is not only satisfying but also allows you to control the ingredients and flavors. This guide will take you through the steps to make a rich, flavorful roasted tomato sauce.

What You'll Need:

  • 4 pounds of fresh tomatoes (Roma or plum tomatoes work best)

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil (or a handful of fresh basil, chopped)

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)

Steps to Make Your Tomato Sauce:

  1. Prep Your Ingredients: Gather all your ingredients and set up your workspace. This is a great time to let the kids help wash the tomatoes and peel the garlic.

  2. Roast the Tomatoes: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Cut the tomatoes in half and place them cut-side up on a baking sheet. Drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for about 40 minutes, until they are soft and slightly caramelized.

  3. Cook the Onions and Garlic: While the tomatoes are roasting, heat some olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until they are translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, being careful not to let it burn.

  4. Blend the Tomatoes: Once the tomatoes are roasted, let them cool slightly. Then, transfer them to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. You can leave some chunks if you prefer a chunkier sauce.

  5. Combine Everything: Pour the blended tomatoes into the pot with the onions and garlic. Add the dried basil, dried oregano, and sugar (if using). Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

  6. Simmer and Reduce: Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will help the flavors meld together and the sauce to thicken. If using fresh basil, add it in the last 10 minutes of cooking.

  7. Adjust Seasonings: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings as needed. You might want to add a bit more salt, pepper, or even a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat.

  8. Store and Enjoy: Let the sauce cool completely before storing it in airtight containers. You can refrigerate it for up to a week or freeze it for up to three months.

This homemade tomato sauce is perfect for pasta, pizza, or any dish that calls for tomato sauce!
