Homestead Tip of the Day:

Extend your growing season by constructing a simple greenhouse. Use PVC pipes, wood, or metal frames, and cover with clear plastic or polycarbonate panels. A greenhouse protects plants from extreme weather and allows for year-round gardening.

All Things Homestead

A few months ago, I tested out an all-natural laundry detergent recipe that’s worked so efficiently! In my opinion, it’s better than Tide, and I feel so much better about it. Plus, it’s HE (High-Efficiency) washer approved!

Why Go DIY?

  • Natural Ingredients: No harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances.

  • Cost-Effective: Make your own detergent and save money in the long run.

  • Eco-Friendly: Reduce plastic waste by using reusable containers.

DIY Natural Laundry Detergent Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup washing soda

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 cup grated castile soap (unscented or your favorite natural scent)

  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt

  • 20 drops essential oil (optional for fragrance, lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus are great choices)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, grated castile soap, and Epsom salt. Stir well.

  2. Add Essential Oils: If using, add the essential oils and mix thoroughly to distribute the fragrance evenly.

  3. Store: Transfer the mixture to an airtight container. Use about 2 tablespoons per load for a standard washing machine and 1 tablespoon for HE washers.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Gentle on Skin: Perfect for sensitive skin with no irritating chemicals.

  • Powerful Clean: Effectively removes stains and leaves clothes fresh and clean.

  • Customizable: Tailor the scent and strength to your preferences.

How Personal Boundaries Boost Happiness and Respect ⛔

Today, let's chat about setting up boundaries like you would a fence around your garden. It’s not just to keep things out, but to nurture what’s growing inside!

Here’s how you can build and respect your own boundaries, making sure you and everyone around you thrive like a well-tended crop:

  • Know Your Limits: Just like knowing how much water your tomatoes need, understand what you can handle emotionally and physically. This might mean saying no to extra tasks when you're already stretched thin.

  • Communicate Clearly: When setting boundaries, be as clear as a sunny day. Let your family and friends know your limits in a kind and respectful way. It’s like planting a sign in your vegetable patch saying, "Please water me!"

  • Respect Others' Boundaries: Just as you respect the fences on your neighbor’s property, respect the boundaries others set with you. This shows mutual respect and builds trust, like swapping seeds with a fellow gardener.

  • Give Yourself Permission to Say No: It's okay to skip activities if they drain your energy. Think of it as pruning away the less healthy branches to let the strong ones flourish.

  • Make Time for Yourself: Set aside time for activities that recharge you. It could be as simple as a quiet hour with a book or a walk around your homestead.

  • Seek Balance: Just as a well-balanced soil leads to a productive garden, balancing your personal needs with your commitments can lead to a healthier, happier life.

  • Regularly Reassess Your Boundaries: Just like checking on your fences after a storm, occasionally review and adjust your boundaries as needed. Life changes, and so do your needs.

Remember, setting boundaries is about inviting people into your life in a way that keeps everyone happy and healthy.
