ALL THINGS HOMESTEAD

Canned Beets - The Best-Kept Secret in Your Pantry 🤫

Hello, fellow homesteaders! Let’s talk about one of the most underrated, hardworking staples for your pantry: canned beets. Stay with me here, because these little ruby gems are way more than just “that one thing Grandma used to make.”

Why Beets Belong in Your Pantry

Here’s a fun fact: Beets love bad weather. Rain, chill, or heat, they just keep growing like champs. This makes them perfect for the homesteader who doesn’t have time to baby their crops (aka all of us). And once you can them? They sit pretty on your shelves for months, waiting to be thrown into salads, soups, or even a quick snack.

Pickled or Plain: What’s Your Beet Style?

Let’s break it down:

  • Plain Canned Beets: Sweet, earthy, and simple. These work well in soups, stews, or roasted with a bit of olive oil. Bonus? They’re the perfect base for all kinds of recipes.

  • Pickled Beets: Tangy, sweet, and a little bold. These are a flavor-packed snack on their own or a great addition to salads. Think of them as the life of the pantry party.

What You’ll Need

✅ Beets: About 20 pounds for 7 quarts. (Yes, you’ll feel like a beet farmer. It’s fine.)

✅ Pressure Canner: Essential for safety. No skipping this step, y’all.

✅ Canning Jars & Lids: Quart or pint jars, depending on how much beet love you’re spreading.

✅ Vinegar & Salt: A little seasoning goes a long way.

✅ Tools: Jar lifter, funnel, and a towel for cleaning up the beet juice you will spill (don’t ask how I know).

Quick Step-by-Step

  1. Prep the Beets: Wash, trim, and boil until tender. Leave the skins on for now.

  2. Peel & Cut: Once cooled, peel the skins and chop into slices or cubes. (Or leave them whole if they’re small!)

  3. Pack the Jars: Add beets, a pinch of salt, and boiling water. Leave 1-inch of headspace.

  4. Pressure Can: Process at 10-11 PSI for 30 minutes (pints) or 35 minutes (quarts).

  5. Cool & Store: Let the jars cool for 12-18 hours, check the seals, and stash them in a cool, dark spot.

Tips to Beet-Canning Greatness

  • Choose Small Beets: The smaller the beet, the sweeter the flavor. Aim for firm, fresh ones for the best results.

  • Avoid the Beet Bleed: Don’t cut off the whole root or stem when prepping. This keeps the juices inside (and your kitchen counter less...pink).

  • Peel Like a Boss: Boil the beets until tender, then rub the skins off. Gloves are optional but recommended unless you’re going for a “just finished finger painting” look.

  • Use Quality Tools: A good pressure canner, a funnel, and a jar lifter make your life easier. Think of them as your beet-dream team.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Homemaking for the Hustling Homesteader 😎

Let’s face it, homemaking can feel like an endless to-do list that never takes a day off. Between managing the garden, chasing after kids (or goats), and keeping life on track, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the thing: with the right systems, you can handle homemaking without losing your mind.

So grab your coffee (or that half-drunk cup you keep reheating), and let’s talk about how to make homemaking work for busy lives like ours.

1. Time-Blocking: Your Secret Weapon

Time-blocking is like creating a “chore appointment” with yourself, and it works wonders for busy schedules.

  • Divide and Conquer: Break your day into chunks and assign specific tasks to specific times. For example, tidy the kitchen from 7:00–7:30 a.m., then water the garden at 4:00 p.m.

  • Focus on Bite-Sized Tasks: Instead of “clean the entire house” (LOL, no), try “vacuum the living room” or “fold one basket of laundry.” Little wins add up!

  • Match Tasks with Energy: Don’t schedule deep cleaning at 9 p.m. when you’re running on fumes. Save easy stuff for tired moments and tackle the big stuff when you’re fresh.

Time-blocking doesn’t just organize your day; it takes the guesswork out of homemaking so you can focus on getting things done.

2. Routines: The Real MVP

Homemaking routines are like auto-pilot for your brain. Once you set them, they do the heavy lifting for you.

  • Morning Routine: Knock out a few key chores first thing. Make the bed, unload the dishwasher, and start a load of laundry. Boom—your day is already winning.

  • Evening Reset: End the day by tidying high-traffic areas like the kitchen or living room. A quick 15-minute sweep works wonders (and makes tomorrow’s you very happy).

  • Weekly Rhythm: Dedicate certain days to certain tasks. Mondays = laundry, Tuesdays = deep cleaning, Fridays = restocking pantry jars. Keeping it predictable keeps it manageable.

Pro tip: Keep routines simple and flexible. Life happens, and skipping one day doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it just means you’re human.

3. Get the Whole Crew Involved

Homemaking isn’t a one-person show—unless you live alone, in which case, carry on, superstar. If you’ve got family, they can (and should) help!

  • Chore Delegation 101: Assign age-appropriate tasks. Little kids can put away toys or wipe surfaces, while teens can tackle dishes or yard work.

  • Make It Fun(ish): Turn cleaning into a game. Race to see who can put away the most laundry or clean their space the fastest. Winner gets to pick dessert.

  • Family Meetings: Use 5–10 minutes to go over tasks for the week. When everyone knows their role, there’s less whining. (Well, hopefully.)

Sharing the load creates more time for togetherness—and fewer resentful feelings about being the only one scrubbing toilets.

4. Prioritize Like a Boss

Here’s a truth bomb: You can’t do it all. And that’s okay! The key to stress-free homemaking is knowing what really needs to get done and letting the rest wait.

  • The Big Three: Choose 3 tasks that will make the biggest difference. Maybe it’s a clean kitchen, fresh laundry, and vacuumed floors. Focus on those and let less urgent stuff slide.

  • The 80/20 Rule: 20% of tasks bring 80% of the results. Cleaning the fridge? Yes, please. Organizing your yarn stash? Not today.

  • Done is Better Than Perfect: Your house doesn’t need to look like a magazine spread. If the dishes are clean and the floors aren’t sticky, you’re winning.

5. Plan It, Don’t Wing It

A homemaking plan turns chaos into calm. Schedule tasks into your day like they’re appointments, and stick to them.

  • Start Small: Plan just one or two tasks a day if you’re new to this.

  • Batch Your Work: Do similar chores together. Clean bathrooms in one go or knock out errands in a single trip.

  • Leave Room for Life: Don’t overfill your schedule. Build in buffer time for unexpected things (like when the chickens escape…again).

Activity: Your Must-Do Task List

Let’s make this practical! Write down 5–7 non-negotiable tasks for your day. Here’s an example:

  • Make beds.

  • Start a load of laundry.

  • Prep dinner ingredients.

  • Wipe down kitchen counters.

  • Sweep high-traffic floors.

  • Tidy up living room toys.

  • Check the garden for ripe produce.

Now, fit these tasks into your day. Pair them with natural breaks: fold laundry while watching TV, prep dinner while chatting with your family. Homemaking doesn’t have to feel like a chore all the time.
